A Higher Dimensional Version of a Problem of Erdős
Let {p1, . . . , pn} ⊆ Rd. We think of d n. How big is the largest subset X of points such that all of the distances determined by elements of ( X 2 ) are different? We show that |X| ≥ Ω(n 1 3d−3+o(1) ). This improves on the best known result which was |X| ≥ Ω(n 1 3d−2 ). Assume that no a of the points are on the same (a− 1)-hyperplane. How big is the largest subset X of points such that all of...

A Higher-level Bailey Lemma
We propose a generalization of Bailey’s lemma, useful for proving q-series identities. As an application, generalizations of Euler’s identity, the Rogers–Ramanujan identities, and the Andrews–Gordon identities are derived. The generalized Bailey lemma also allows one to derive the branching functions of higher-level A (1) 1 cosets. 1. The Bailey Lemma In his famous 1949 paper, W. N. Bailey note...
متن کاملA Constrained version of Sauer’s Lemma
Sauer’s Lemma is extended to classes H of binary-valued functions on [n] = {1, . . . , n} which have a margin less than or equal to N on x ∈ [n], where the margin μh(x) of a binary valued function h at a point x ∈ [n] is defined as the largest nonnegative integer a such that h is constant on the interval Ia(x) = [x−a, x+a] ⊆ [n]. Estimates are obtained for the cardinality of classes of binary v...

Theorem 1 If there is an assignment 0 < xi < 1 satisfying for every i: Pr[Ai] ≤ xi ∏ j|Aj∈Γ(Ai) (1− xj) then the probability that no event Ai happens is at least ∏m i=1(1− xi) > 0. Observe that if the events were independent, the probability that no bad event happens would have been exactly ∏m i=1(1−Pr[Ai]). Hence in a sense, replacing the Pr[Ai] values by the larger xi values is the penalty pa...
